24 Days Until the Olympics!

Everyone here is buzzing about the Olympics – dealcheckers lucky enough to snag some tickets have received them, and plans are being made to watch the torch go by close to the big day. Unfortunately our editor Alice is very distressed – she won’t be able to see it even though it goes past her house. Why? I hear you cry – well it’s because she’s off to a festival instead. So don’t feel sorry for her!

Torch Watch

Speaking of the torch, it’s had a bit of a busy time! The route has been particularly imaginative with Beg Fogle flying it in a hot air balloon over the Eden Project and Bear Grylls ziplining across the Tyne. And in the latest instalment, the torch has taken off from the National Space Centre in Leicester, thanks to Jet Pack Man!

European Athletics

The European Championships in Finland were held over the weekend, and we had a modest medal haul. There were three gold medals – Robbie Grabarz in the high jump, Mo Farah in the 5,000m and Rhys Williams in the 400m hurdles. There were more track medals too with Jo Pavey getting silver in the 10,000m and Lynsey Sharpe in the 800m and the mens 4x400m also getting second prize. And new sprinting talent Danny Talbot won bronze in the 200m.

Usain Bolt Watch

It’s going to be tougher in the Olympics for Danny though, if the Jamaican Olympic Trials are anything to go by. Bolt was beaten in both the 100m and the 200m by Yohan Blake. Will history repeat when it comes to events in the Olympic Stadium? Only time will tell!

Team GB Football

It seems like we’ve just seen the back of the football, but it’s time to think about the Team GB squad! Stuart Pearce has picked his bunch of under and it’s making waves as no Scottish or Northern Irish players are included. Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Micah Richards are the senior players allowed under the rules, whilst Aaron Ramsey, Daniel Sturridge and Tom Cleverley all get a chance to compete for gold too.

On The Beach

With the sailing events happening in Weymouth, this week hundreds of Olympic deck chairs have been unveiled. Designed by local residents, you can hire one to watch the day’s sailing if you fancy a trip to the coast!
